FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Sept. 27, 2024) – It was a strong opening to the Jon Messick Invitational Friday for the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team down at Colorado State. Three Cowgirl doubles tandems each went 2-0 on the day, while UW picked up four singles wins, including two victories over Oregon to begin play at the invite.
The invitational began with two rounds of doubles Friday. The doubles team of Serina Abriola and Eugenia Ceinos opened the day with a 6-3 win over Iowa State. The duo closed with a 6-4 victory against Weber State.
Violetta Borodina and Dilnaz Mashabayeva continued their strong fall together as the duo picked up 6-3 wins over both Utah State and Colorado State. Adel Ismagulova and Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia opened doubles play with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4) win over Oregon before winning 6-4 against a team from Iowa State.
Borodina, Ismagulova, Kochelaevskaia and Elena Trencheva picked up the singles victories for the Cowgirls. Ismagulova and Kochelaevskaia both earned straight-set wins Friday. Ismagulova won 6-3 and 7-5 over Carissa Holguin of Air Force while Kochelaevskaia was victorious 6-1 and 6-1 over South Dakota's Katarina Curcic.
Borodina and Trencheva got the wins over the Ducks, both coming in three sets. Borodina defeated Oregon's Marjorie Souza, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-4. Trencheva, meanwhile, rallied to come out on top, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-1.
Day two of three begins at 9 a.m., Saturday in Fort Collins.
