Cowgirls Host Big Weekend Against UNLV and San Diego State

LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 5, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team hosts its lone conference weekend of the season this week as UNLV and 50th-ranked San Diego State come to town. The Cowgirls will face UNLV Friday and San Diego State Saturday with both matches beginning at 10 a.m.

The Cowgirls (9-8, 4-0) are off to their best start in Mountain West play since 2017, when they went a perfect 5-0 for the entire conference slate. UW picked up a pair of neutral-site victories last weekend in Fort Collins, defeating Nevada 4-3 and San Jose State, 4-2. Sophie Zehender went 2-0 at the No. 1 singles spot last week and is now one of four Cowgirls with a winning record during MW play. Noesjka Brink and Nikol Dobrilova also picked up a win last week and are both now 3-1 in league play with Dobrilova leading the Cowgirls with 10 dual wins this season.

On the doubles side of things, the team of Violetta Borodina and Maria Oreshkina ran their consecutive wins streak to nine straight with a pair of wins last weekend. The tandem is now 10-4 on the season and 4-0 in conference action. Wyoming is looking to continue its excellent home mark in matches under Head Coach Dean Clower. The Cowgirls are 54-9 all-time in Laramie under Clower.

Saturday will also be Senior Day at 7220 as Fernandez and Oreshkina will be honored prior to the match against the Aztecs.

UNLV has had an excellent start to its season, entering Friday with an 11-2 mark overall and is 3-1 in Mountain West play. The Rebels are 0-1 in their lone road match of the season. San Diego State comes into the weekend ranked 50th in the ITA poll and is 10-5 overall and 3-1 in MW play. The Aztecs are 4-2 this season against ranked opponents and is 2-2 in true road matches.
