BOISE, Idaho — The University of Wyoming Cross Country Teams ran hard on Friday morning on Boise Idaho at the 2023 Mountain West Cross Country Championships with the Cowboys taking fourth and the women finishing sixth in a good field.

The Pokes took fourth finishing behind three ranked teams in New Mexico, Air Force and Boise State. The Cowboys led by Mason Norman, placing 13th as an individual, finished 21 points behind third place Boise and 34 points ahead of fifth place Utah State.

The men grouped together from 13th place to 27th place for the top five finishers on the team. Led by Norman, Ryker Holtzen, Gus McIntyre, Asefa Wetzel and Jacob White rounded out the scorers for the men.

Head Cross Country Coach Scott Dahlberg said, "The men ran the best team race of the season. 20 seconds between our first and fifth guy is great. Decreasing our pack split is something we knew was possible and have been working towards this season. Asefa and Gus really stepped up and had great days."

The Cowgirls ran well and were separated by just four points in a battle for fourth place with New Mexico and Utah State. The women, led by Abigail Whitman in sixth place as an individual, came up two points away from the Aggies and four points away from the Lobos for fourth.

Finishing in a range from sixth to 41st the Cowgirls paced by Whitman went Kylie Simshauser, Hailey Uhre, Madelyn Blazo and Eowyn Dalbec in the top five.

Dahlberg continued, "We expected the women's race would be a close battle between 3rd to 6th place and that's how it ended up. The girls fought hard the last half of the race to get every point they could. Abigail has been stringing together some amazing races. She's been consistently racing at another level and we're super happy for her."
