Three Pokes Capture Titles on Day Three of Mountain West Outdoor Championships

FRESNO, Calif. — The Wyoming Track and Field Squad had a busy third day of competition on Friday at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Day three of competition was highlighted by three different Pokes winning Mountain West Titles. 
 
Kareem Mersal provided the Pokes with their first event win of the MW Outdoor Championships with an outstanding performance in the men's long jump. Mersal went 25-2 to secure the top spot finishing as the only competitor to break 25 feet. Hunter Brown finished just behind Mersal earning second place with a leap of 24-9.75. On the women's side, Shayla Howell completed the event sweep for the Brown and Gold, winning the women's long jump in dominating fashion. Howell was the only athlete in the field to clear 20 feet going 20-3.75 to seal the win. Both Mersal and Howell earned their outdoor titles after also winning the conference long jump titles during the indoor season. 
 
Pete Mead had a day to remember as he struck gold in the men's high jump to capture his first career conference title. Mead put together an outstanding performance turning in season best mark of 6-9. 
 
Daniel Carrillo finished on the podium in the men's shot-put taking third with a throw of 55-8.25. With the mark Carrillo moves into tenth all time in program history. Nathan Reid also earned points in the event taking sixth with a throw of 52-8.25. On the women's side, Addison Henry led the way finishing fourth with a toss of 50-1.25. 
 
In the Women's hammer throw finals, Addison Henry picked up a point for the Cowgirls finishing in eighth with a throw of 178-11. On the men's side, Daniel Carrillo was the lone Cowboy to compete finishing in 11th with a throw of 147-2. 
 
On the track, Friday featured the prelim races for middle distance and sprints while the distance runners competed in the 3000M Steeplechase finals.
 
In the lone track finals of the day, Katelyn Mitchem earned a silver medal finish in the women's 3000M Steeplechase clocking a personal best time of 10:10.86. With her time, Mitchem moved up a spot in the record books and now sits in second all-time in program history. On the men's side, Seth Bruxvoort earned points for Wyoming with a fifth-place finish clocking a personal best time of 8:49.21. With the time Bruxvoort moved up into fifth all time in program history. 
 
Jaymison Cox was the first Cowboy of the day to punch a ticket to the finals after a strong outing in the men's 400M prelims. Cox clocked a time of 48.13, finishing with the sixth fastest time and moving on to Saturday's final. 
 
In the men's 100M prelims Wyatt Moore raced to a spot in the finals after finishing fifth with a time of 10.61. On the women's side, Howell continued her impressive night by finishing sixth in the prelims and advancing to the finals with a time of 11.87. 
 
The Cowboys produced another finalist in the men's 800M behind a strong performance from Joseph Rodgers. Rodgers clocked a time of 1:50.38 in the prelims clocking the third best time amongst the 15 athletes competing and advancing to the finals. 
 
In the men's 400M Hurdles prelims, the duo of Caige McComb and Carson Kaminski advanced to the finals after finishing eighth and ninth with time of 55.51 and 55.74 respectively. 
 
In the team standings, the Cowboys currently sit in fourth with 51.5 points while the Cowgirls are in sixth with 24 points. 
 
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will wrap up competition tomorrow with the fourth and final day action competing in the finals for the track events as well as the finals for discus, triple jump, and javelin.
