FORT COLLINS, Colo. (April 22, 2022) – The Wyoming tennis team closed the regular season on a high note Friday morning in a neutral-site matchup against Nevada. The Cowgirls impressed with a 4-1 victory over the Wolf Pack.
The Cowgirls (11-12, 5-5 MW) started off strong in the contest, taking the doubles point behind wins at the No. 1 and 3 doubles spots. The team of Mihaela Kaftanova and Lucia Malinak got UW on the board first with a 6-3 victory at the third position. Then, it was Ida Krause and Maria Oreshkina who clinched the point for the Cowgirls, winning 6-4 at No. 1.
During singles play, Wyoming won 3-of-4 matches that were completed Friday. Malinak at the No. 3 spot was first to win, as she won in straight-sets, 6-2 and 7-6. Kaftanova made it a perfect 2-0 week for her at No. 6, as she won 6-2 and 7-5 to put the Cowgirls one point away from clinching. At the first spot, it was Oreshkina who clinched as she closed her strong weekend with a 7-6 and 6-3 win.
With the victory, the Cowgirls close the regular season locked into the No. 6 seed at next week's Mountain West Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., where they will play 11 seeded Utah State at 1 p.m. MT Wednesday, April 27.
