LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 31, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team hosts its home-opening weekend of Mountain West play Saturday and Sunday as New Mexico and Air Force come to town, respectively. The Cowgirls play UNM at 10 a.m., April 2 and close the weekend with a 2 p.m., match against AFA.
The Cowgirls (7-8, 1-1 MW) opened league play last week with a split in Fresno, Calif. UW opened MW play with a 4-2 loss to Fresno State, before bouncing back for a 4-1 victory over defending conference champion San Jose State.
UW won the doubles point in both matches last weekend while Sophie Zehender went 2-0 at the No. 2 singles spot. Against the Spartans, the Cowgirls also got singles wins from Maria Oreshkina (No. 1) and Ida Krause (No. 5) to secure the win. The trio are now all tied for the team lead with seven singles wins during dual action this spring.
The doubles tandem of Krause and Oreshkina both won their doubles' matches last weekend, moving to 8-5 as a duo this spring, by far the most doubles wins on the Cowgirls this season. Ana Fernandez and Zehender went unfinished in their match against Fresno State, but won against San Jose State, as the All-Mountain West Doubles Team started conference play with a win and picked up their fourth win together this spring.
New Mexico enters the weekend with a 9-5 mark overall and is 0-2 in league play, having lost last week at home to Air Force (4-0) and Nevada (4-2). The Cowgirls defeated the Lobos 4-2 last season at Air Force to pick up their first conference win of the season in 2021.
The Falcons are riding a three-match winning streak into this weekend's action and have a 13-3 record overall and went 2-0 to open league play last weekend. Sweeping New Mexico and Nevada. AFA won a 4-2 contest last season at home over the Cowgirls.
