FRESNO, Calif. (March 27, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirls bounced back from Saturday's defeat to pick up their first conference victory of the season Sunday morning in Fresno, Calif. Wyoming defeated defending conference champion San Jose State, 4-1 to snap a two-match losing streak.
For the second time this weekend, the Cowgirls (7-8, 1-1 MW) won the doubles point in the match as they got victories at No. 1 and 3. The duo of Ida Krause and Maria Oreshkina won at the first position, 6-3 while Mihaela Kaftanova and Lucia Malinak picked up the win at No. 3, 6-2.
A day after struggling during singles play, Wyoming responded Sunday, winning 3-of-4 singles matchups that were finished in the match. The Cowgirls began with a win at the second spot, as Zehender made quick work of her opponent, winning 6-0 and 6-2. After a loss at No. 4, Ida Krause picked up the win at No. 5 singles as she won 6-3 and 7-6 (7-0). Oreshkina clinched the win later at the first spot as she won a hard-fought straight-sets match, 7-6 (7-3) and 6-4.
With their wins Sunday, all three of Krause, Oreshkina and Zehender move to seven each wins during dual play this spring, which is a team-best. Zehender improved to 7-2 this spring, while Krause is now 7-5 in duals.
Next up for the Cowgirls, is a return trip back home as they play their first two conference matches of the season next weekend. Wyoming hosts New Mexico at 10 a.m., April 2 and then faces Air Force at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 3.
