FRESNO, Calif. (March 26, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened Mountain West play Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 loss to 68th-ranked Fresno State in California, snapping the Cowgirls' seven-match conference winning streak from last season.
Wyoming (6-8, 0-1 MW) opened the match by winning the doubles' point as the tandems of Ida Krause and Maria Oreshkina and Ana Fernandez and Sophie Zehender picked up doubles victories. At the No. 1 spot, Krause and Oreshkina won 6-2 while in the second position, Fernandez and Zehender rallied to force a tiebreak, which they won 7-4 to take the match, 7-6.
On the singles' side of things, Zehender was the lone Cowgirl to pick up a win Saturday. Zehender's win came at the No. 2 spot, 6-3 and 6-4. Lucia Malinak was locked into a third set with her opponent at the third spot but went unfinished as the Bulldogs (11-3) clinched the match with their three-set victory at No. 6 singles.
The Cowgirls look to snap their two-match losing streak as they close the weekend with a 10 a.m., MT match against San Jose State Sunday in Fresno.
