LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 24, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opens its 21st season of Mountain West play this weekend as the Cowgirls travel to Fresno, Calif., for matchups with Fresno State, Saturday at 2 p.m., and San Jose State for a 10 a.m., contest Sunday.
Wyoming (6-7) is coming off a hard-fought loss to Colorado Wednesday in Laramie, losing to the Buffs in a tightly contested sweep. The Cowgirls lost three, three-set singles matches in the loss and lost the two completed doubles contests, 7-5.
The Cowgirls, who are currently on a seven-match conference winning streak after closing last season with seven consecutive wins, are 39-15 in league play under Head Coach Dean Clower. UW split with the Bulldogs and Spartans last season, defeating FSU 4-2 in Laramie and lost a 4-3 battle to SJSU in 2021's conference-opener.
Lucia Malinak went a perfect 8-0 in Mountain West singles play last season, while Maria Oreshkina and Sophie Zehender were named to the All-MW Singles Team in 2021. Zehender, and her partner Ana Fernandez, were named to the All-MW Doubles squad after going 5-3 in league play as a tandem.
Fresno State enters this weekend with a 10-3 mark overall this season and is a perfect 4-0 at home thus far. SJSU, who is the reigning Mountain West champion, is 4-6 on the season and has a 2-4 mark away from home this season.
