LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 21, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team closes out non-conference play Wednesday in Laramie as the Cowgirls welcome Colorado to town for a noon match.
UW (6-6) has won two-straight matches, both of which coming at home, entering Wednesday's contest. The Cowgirls are coming off a 5-2 victory March 3 over Northern Arizona. The Cowgirls showed great perseverance in the victory, as they won four, three-set matches on the night.
After dropping the doubles point and then losing at No. 1 singles due to retirement, UW came storming back to win the final five singles matches to secure the victory. Lucia Malinak opened the winning for the Cowgirls in the match, winning at the No 4. Spot, 6-1 and 7-5. Sophie Zehender was the next Cowgirl to win, winning UW's first three-set match of the night, as she won at the second position, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-3 as the Cowgirls tied things up at 2-2.
At No. 3 singles, Ana Fernandez was victorious in three sets, 6-4, 1-6 and 7-5. Ida Krause followed that up and secured the win for Wyoming with her win at the fourth spot. Krause rallied to win 4-6, 6-2 and 7-5. Mihaela Kaftanova rounded things out on the night as she picked up a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7) and 1-0 (10-5).
On the doubles' side of play, the tandem of Fernandez and Zehender got the Cowgirls' lone win as they took the No. 2 match, 7-6 (7-0).
The Buffaloes enter Wednesday with a 5-10 overall mark in 2022. CU has played a pair of Mountain West opponents already this spring, having beaten Air Force 4-2 earlier this month and losing to Colorado State, 4-2, a week later.
Wednesday will be the Cowgirls' final non-conference home match of the spring before they open Mountain West play this weekend. UW will have four home conference matches this season coming up in April.
