LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Oct. 13, 2022) – Lucia Malinak picked up a pair of singles victories in her flight two bracket Thursday on day two of the ITA Mountain Regional in Las Vegas to lead the Wyoming tennis team at the event.
Malinak opened the day with an exciting come-from-behind three-set victory over Utah Tech's Alysha Damron, winning 2-6, 6-4 and 6-1. Malinak then followed that up with a straight-sets 6-4 and 6-3 win over Ava Neyestani of Northern Arizona to advance to the quarterfinals in her flight.
The doubles tandem of Malinak and Nikol Dobrilova made it a perfect 2-for-2 in as many days to start their tournament as well. The duo defeated Nevada's Campino and Moutama in impressive fashion, defeating the Wolf Pack tandem, 8-2. Other Cowgirl doubles matches included the team of Noesjka Brink and Maria Oreshkina, falling in the second round to Colorado's Puzak and Tokac, 8-3.
In other singles action, Ana Fernandez lost her matchup with Boise State's Shauna Hefferma, 6-2 and 7-5. In the "Main" draw, Sophie Zehender was bested by Colorado's Elys Ventura, 6-1 and 6-3.
UW will continue action Friday in Sin City with winner's bracket doubles and singles action, as well as consolation matches.
