LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Oct. 12, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirls opened ITA Mountain Region play Wednesday in Las Vegas with first round action in both singles in doubles.
Sophie Zehender picked up a victory in her "Main" draw matchup with Montana's Haugen. Zehender took the win in straight sets, winning 6-1 and 6-2. Wyoming had three others compete in the main draw Wednesday. Noesjka Brink was defeated by Weber State's Ana Morett, 6-4 and 6-2 while Nikol Dobrilova lost a hard-fought three-setter to Utah's Anastasia Goncharova, 6-3, 6-7 and 6-4. Maria Oreshkina rounded-out main draw singles play against Tina Marie Li of BYU, dropping a 7-5 and 6-2 contest.
In flight two singles action, Lucia Malinak picked up the Cowgirls' second singles win on the day, as she defeated Felecia Jayasapultra of Montana State, 6-1, 6-1. Ana Fernandez, meanwhile, received a bye into the next round and will begin her singles action Thursday.
In doubles, the Cowgirls got victories from Brink and Oreshkina, as they won in impressive fashion, 8-1 over Agrawal and Murphy of Montana. UW also got an exciting victory from the team of Dobrilova and Malinak, as they defeated O'Connor and Sodre of New Mexico, 8-7. Ana Fernandez and Zehender also played in doubles action, losing 8-4 to Idaho State's Olideadha twins.
