FORT COLLINS, Colo. AND CARY, N.C. (Oct. 1, 2022) – The Wyoming tennis team was in action at multiple locations Saturday. The Cowgirls competed in day two at the Jon Messick Invitational hosted by Colorado State and also played at the ITA All-America Championships.
Down at CSU, Lucia Malinak opened the day with a hard-fought victory in a three-set, super set match with Annaliese County of Utah State. Maliank rallied to win 3-6, 6-3 and 10-1. In her second singles match of the day, Malinak was defeated in another three-setter, losing 6-3, 3-6 and 7-10 to Denver's Martinez de Velasco.
Nikol Dobrilova also saw singles action Saturday as she picked up a victory in the consolation bracket. Dobrilova beat Grace Chadick of South Dakota in another long match for the Cowgirls. Dobrilova showed resilience, rallying to win a long three-set match, 4-6, 6-4 and 11-9.
Both Dobrilova and Malinak will be in consolation action Sunday at CSU.
In North Carolina at the ITAs, Sophie Zehender lost in her first pre-qualifying round, losing to Arizona's Midori Castillo, 6-4 and 6-2. Zehender was the only singles match for UW in North Carolina as Maria Oreshkina begins play Monday.
On the doubles side of play, it was the team of Ana Fernandez and Sophie Zehender that picked up a victory. The tandem won their first match 8-5 over Tulane's Kristen Borland and Adelaide Lavery. However, in the second matchup for Fernandez and Zehender, they were best by Hannah McColgan and Marta Perez Mur of Maryland, losing a well-contested 8-6 matchup.
