Laramie, Wyo.  (Sept. 27, 2021) --  The Wyoming Cowboy golf team started fast on Monday at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational and they maintained that throughout the first 36 holes.  Wyoming is in fifth place in the field of 17 teams, while Cowboy Tyler Severin is tied for fifth place and Kirby Coe-Kirkham is tied for 20th.
 
Wyoming shot an opening round 271 (-17) and followed that up with a 281 (-7) for a total of 552 (-24) entering Tuesday's final round. 
 
Severin led the way with rounds of 65 (-7) and 69 (-3) for a 134 (-10) total to tie for fifth.  Coe-Kirkham is tied for 20th at 137 (-7), with rounds of 69 (-3) and 68 (-4). 
 
"We had a good day today," said UW Director of Golf and Head Coach Joe Jensen.  "We had a good practice round on Sunday and carried that into today's two rounds.  I told the guys after last weekend that we needed the veteran players to lead, and they did that.
 
"Going into the tournament, we talked about the need to play more consistently, and I saw more consistency today.  I also emphasized that I wanted them to play free and not put too much pressure on themselves, and I believe they responded well to that approach."
 
Boise State leads in the team standings at 531 (-45).  Utah is in second at 542 (-34).  San Francisco holds down third place  only four shots ahead of the Cowboys at 548 (-28).  Utah Valley is in fourth -- a mere two strokes ahead of the Pokes at 550 (-26).
 
Wyoming is scheduled to tee off Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. and will play in a foursome with Colorado, UTEP and San Diego.
 
The tournament is being played at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo., and is being hosted by the University of Colorado.  The course measures 7,676 yards and plays to a par of 72.
