LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 28, 2021) – Despite outshooting its opponent over 90 minutes, the Wyoming soccer team (1-5-0, 1-4-0 MW) closed out the home season with a 1-0 loss against the Air Force Falcons (2-4-0) on Sunday afternoon. It was senior day for
Grace Collins,
Molly Kuhbacher and
Elle Webber.
"Honestly, I was proud of our effort," head coach
Pete Cuadrado said. "We created a ton of chances and it would have been nice to see one find the back of the net, but you can't fault the play. We moved the ball well, it was a tough goal we gave up and didn't give up a lot of chances today. At the end of the day, I'm proud of the seniors, what they've contributed both on and off the field for our program which has been huge for us. They get to leave with a championship. The season isn't over, we would like to continue push to get wins and that's the goal going forward."
The Cowgirls seemed to come out aggressive with an early shot by freshman
Nikayla Copenhaver in the sixth minute that was saved by goalie Cammi Bych. Unfortunately with 7:15 on the clock, there was traffic in front of the goal and a shot from the top on the box by Jordi Ives made it past the arms of junior goalie
Hannah Lee to make it a 1-0 contest. Faith Lee would record the assist on the play. Sophomore
Jamie Tatum had two solid looks on goal in the eighth and 16
th minute which just missed. Air Force pushed the pace and recorded three straight shots on frame which were saved by Lee. The Cowgirls had good looks by sophomore
Faith Joiner at 27:48 and 43:46 which were saved by Bych. After 45 minutes, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead to the break. Both teams finished with five shots in the period.
In the second half, Wyoming came out firing with a shot just 11 seconds in from junior
Kennedy Schomer that nearly missed. Tatum had another opportunity at the 53:54 mark from the top of the box which was picked up by Bych. The Falcons lone shot in the second period came in the 60
th minute from Cassi Bych that went wide. The Cowgirls would record the next four shots of the half but couldn't come up with the equalizer to fall short in the contest, 1-0.
Tatum and Joiner each finished with a match-high three shots, two on goal. Four other Cowgirls recorded one shot each with three of them with a chance at the net. Junior
Savannah Warner played all 90 minutes in goal followed by sophomore
Keelie Wortmann going 85 minutes in the contest. Lee and sophomore
Alex Daws each played a half and recorded a total of three saves. Wyoming finished with 11 shots compared to six by the Falcons. Air Force was led by Ryley Tanner with two shots, while four others had a shot apiece.
The Cowgirls will record to the pitch on Saturday, April 3 against the Colorado State Rams. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. MT at the CSU Soccer Field in Ft. Collins.
