LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 2, 2021) – With the regular season wrapped up, the Wyoming Wrestling squad now is now set to compete at the Big 12 Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on March 6-7. Head Coach
Mark Branch shared his thoughts on one the unique season and the upcoming Big 12 tournament.
"I think this season has gone really smooth considering we were still trying to put a schedule together in December. With so much up in the air, and then being able to start competing in early January I think is pretty remarkable." Coach Brand said "We didn't really miss any competitions because of COVID, which I think is a great testament to the people here that have worked really hard to keep our season intact."
The Cowboys went 3-3 in duals on the season facing five top 25 teams, picking up big wins over No. 17 Central Michigan and No. 20 West Virginia. The pokes capped off their regular season with a strong outing at the Cowboy Challenge Tournament which saw them crown four champions.
"We've been able to train and improve every week and that's what I've seen out of our guys. We've continued to get better and wrestled our best at our last competition, which is really want you want to see heading into the post season."
The pokes are now focused on the Big 12 Championships going into the tournament with high expectations. Eight Cowboys have a top eight pre-seed led by
Hayden Hastings,
Tate Samuelson and
Stephen Buchanan who were all given the No. 2 pre-seed.
"I always have super high expectations for Big 12's and I want our guys to have those expectations as well. It is going to be challenging but we just have to believe in ourselves. Hopefully that's what the last couple of weeks of the season did for us, was give us the confidence that we can go beat higher ranked guys."
