COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 15, 2021) – In a game that was originally set to be played on Sunday that was moved due to weather, the Wyoming soccer team (1-2-0, 1-2-0 MW) lost a tough 2-1 battle against the Colorado College Tigers (1-1-0, 1-1-0 MW) on Monday afternoon.
Both teams came out strong by exchanging shots through the first 11 minutes of the first half. The Tigers had two shots sail high while Alexis Wessler had her shot on goal saved by goalie Hannah Lee. Senior Rilee Castilla's shot hit the crossbar with 8:54 on the clock and freshman Nikayla Copenhaver went high with her look. Jacqui Hand and Abby Hubbard really pushed the pace for the Tigers with shots in the 14th and 16th minutes that were stopped by Lee. Hand would finally able to get it in the back of the goal with a shot off the left side of the box that reached the right corner to give Colorado College a 1-0 lead. The Tigers had a couple of more opportunities to get in to the scoring column, but four saves by during the half Lee helped the score remain the same after 45 minutes. The Cowgirls had three shots compared to ten by the Tigers.
After a couple of early shots to begin the second half, the Tigers increased its lead with a goal in the 56th minute by a header from Kiley Suter with the assist by Hailee Rasmussen. Over the next ten minutes, each team played evenly until a goal by junior Indianna Asimus cut the lead to make it 2-1. It was her first goal of the season while fellow junior Amber Vokoun had the assist. Unfortunately, the Cowgirls were unable to score the equalizer as the Tigers went on to the 2-1 victory.
Castilla had a team-high two shots in her 48 minutes of play followed by Asimus and Copenhaver with one each. Goalies Lee and Alex Daws split time with 45 minutes a piece and had a combined seven saves. Junior Savannah Warner played a team-high 90 minutes followed by freshman Rae Gerking with 82 minutes of action.
The Cowgirls will be back on the pitch against the Colorado State Rams on Saturday. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. MT at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
