COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 11, 2021) – Despite holding the lead late in the game, the Cowgirl soccer team (1-2-0) dropped 2-1 double overtime heartbreaker after a goal in the 103
rd minute by Air Force (1-1-0) on Thursday afternoon.
Each team got in a couple of early looks from Air Force's Catherine Bakken and Wyoming's
Amber Vokoun to begin the match. In the 11
th minute, Wyoming had its next scoring chance with a shot by sophomore
Jamie Tatum that was saved by goalie Danielle Katz. Air Force had three shots over three minutes that were stopped by the junior goalie
Hannah Lee. After a shot by Wyoming senior
Rilee Castilla, the Falcons recorded five shots with three of them on goal. Even with a combined 16 shots by both teams in the half, the game would be all even, 0-0, after the first 45 minutes.
Air Force came out firing to begin the second half with three shots in the first seven minutes with two of them on goal. At the 58:13 mark off a corner kick, junior
Savannah Warner knocked in a header past the goalie for her first of the season to get the Cowgirls on the board, 1-0. Sophomore
Faith Joiner had the assist. The Falcons really clamped down on defense and was the aggressor on offense recording the next six shots but it didn't result in a score. In the 87
th minute, a foul by the Cowgirls gave Air Force a penalty kick. Natalie Gutierrez would push it past sophomore
Alex Daws to tie up the game at one all. Both teams had shots in the final minutes of regulation but it remained 1-1 and headed to overtime.
In the first overtime, both teams had opportunities to connect. Freshman
Jazi Barela had a look at the 92:20 mark, while Air Force had chances in the 94
th and 99 minute that were saved by Daws. Unfortunately, the Falcons struck early in the second ten minutes. A goal by Tatiana Limon in the upper left part of the goal over the arms of Daws with the assist by Emma Nelson at the 102:51 to give them the 2-1 double overtime win.
Barela finished with a team high three shots with two of them on goal in her 66 minutes off the bench. Tatum recorded two shots while three other Cowgirls had one. Lee played 45 minutes in the net while Daws saw action in 58 minutes while the pair combined for 11 saves. Wyoming had eight shots with six of them on goal. Katz was in net for Air Force and made five saves in 103 minutes. The Falcons had 25 shots on the afternoon.
The Cowgirls are back on the pitch Sunday against the Colorado College Tigers. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. MT the Cadet Indoor Practice facility at the Air Force Academy. Due to COVID and social distancing practices, fans will not be allowed in the venue.
