LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Feb. 24, 2021) – The Cowboy Swimming squad opened up the 2021 WAC Championship on Wednesday night with two relays at the Buchanan Natatorium. Wyoming sits in fifth place with 56 points. UNLV, who is selected to win the championship, leads all teams with 80 points followed by defending champion Air Force with 68. Cal Baptist and Grand Canyon are tied for third with 62 points.
 
"The men are excited to be in the water racing at the WAC Championship," head coach Dave Denniston said. "The first night is two relays. Mitch and Grant had some great splits along with Max with a solid job leading us off in the 200 medley. We are looking forward to the individual races tomorrow."
 
The 200-medley relay and 800-freestyle relays opened up the first day of the conference championship. In the 200 medley, the team of freshman Max DeYoung, senior Mitchell Hovis, freshman Reilly Gilbert and junior Grant Sloan placed fifth with a time of 1:27.95.
 
Wyoming secured another fifth-place finish in the 800-meter freestyle relay. The team senior Austin Crump, junior Miller Browne, sophomore Daniel Cumnock-Francois and junior Ryan Netzel touching the wall in a time of 6:37.63.
 
Action will continue tomorrow with preliminaries for the 500-freestyle beginning 12 p.m. MT, followed by the 200 IM, 50 freestyle, plus the 200 freestyle relay. The evening session for finals in each event are set to start at 7 p.m. Diving will begin with the 1-meter at Aquatic Complex in Flagstaff, Ariz. Prelims are scheduled to begin 11:30 a.m. MT.
