LARAMIE, Wyo. (11/20/21) – The University of Wyoming swimming & diving team has embraced its hectic last 72 hours. The Cowboys and Cowgirls competed at the Missouri Invite from Wednesday-Friday only to return home and host the Corbett Invite at Laramie High School on Saturday.

The team is understandably tired, but that didn't stop many from logging impressive marks Saturday. A total of 13 lifetime-best times were recorded.

"Character is a good way of phrasing it," head coach Dave Denniston said. "And just overall grittiness. Everyone talks about grit in our sport. That type of stuff makes me real proud of this team. They love racing, they love seeing what they can do, and the support they have for each other to get up and do that is inspiring for the whole team and for us as a staff."

Numerous individuals registered multiple first-place finishes Saturday. Senior Andrea Niemann, junior Robert Mitchell, sophomore John Wargin and freshmen Gavin Smith, Sydney Metzler, Rachel Horne and Samantha Diaz all won two races.

Niemann took first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 2:06.71 and 1:04.86, respectively. Mitchell touched first in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 4:40.44 and won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.12.

Wargin swam a 1:56.70 to win the 200-yard IM, and recorded a time of 57.44 to claim first in the 100-yard breaststroke. Smith swam a 50.31 to place first in the 100-yard backstroke, and was a member of the victorious 200-yard medley relay team.

Metzler won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.27 and swam a leg of the first-place finishing 200-yard medley relay team. Diaz touched first in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.99 and participated in the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won, while Horne was also on that relay team and competed on the victorious 200-yard medley relay team.

The Corbett Invite concludes Sunday at 11 a.m.
