LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 11, 2021) – The Wyoming Cowgirls welcome Wichita State to town for a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. This will be just the second meeting in Laramie between UW and the Shockers.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and on select stations of the Cowgirl Radio Network, not pre-empted by high school football. Keith Kelley will be on the call.
A LOOK AT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming used a big third quarter to erase a halftime deficit in Tuesday's opener against CSU Pueblo. Trailing 31-28 at the break, the Cowgirls outscored the ThunderWolves 24-6 in the third, held CSU Pueblo scoreless for the final five-plus minutes of the frame and ended on a 13-0 run. UW ended up outscoring CSU Pueblo 39-22 in the second half on the way to a 67-53 season-opening win.
Quinn Weidemann led three Cowgirls in double figures with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Grace Ellis, in her first-career start, tallied career bests in both points with 11 and rebounds with six. Alba Sanchez Ramos also added 11 points and grabbed team-high eight boards.
All 12 Cowgirls that dressed appeared in the opener, including all three freshmen as Tess Barnes, Allyson Fertig and Emily Mellema all made their first appearances in the Brown & Gold. Fertig and Mellema each scored seven in the contest.
UW returns a ton of production from last year's team, as it welcomes back over 78 percent of its scoring, 79 percent of rebounding and nearly 88 percent of its assists from 2020-21. Tommi Olson, Sanchez Ramos and Weidemann have combined to make 144 career starts and have appeared in 214 total games as trio during their Cowgirl careers.
SCOUTING WICHITA STATE
Wichita State opened the 2021-22 campaign with a 78-34 victory over Chicago State, in Wichita. The Shockers held CSU to just two points in the first quarter and nine in the third. The Shockers had four score in double figures in the win and were led by Mariah McCully's 13.
Wichita State shot 41 percent against CSU, while holding it to just 19 percent shooting. The Shockers had a 38-14 advantage in points in the paint, 26-13 in points off turnovers, 26-9 in fast break points and the bench outscored Chicago State's 36-14 in the win.
Asia Strong, who scored 10 in the contest, was named to the Preseason First Team All-Conference Team by the American Athletic Conference. Strong, who was a second team selection in 2020-21, averaged 15.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while shooting 42.4 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from 3-point range.
The Shockers were picked to finish eighth in the Preseason AAC Coaches' Poll. Wichita State is led by Head Coach Keitha Adams, who is in her fifth season on the bench with the Shockers.
SERIES AGAINST WICHITA STATE
The Cowgirls are 2-1 all-time against Wichita State, having last played the Shockers in November of 2010, a 63-55 UW victory in neutral contest in California. The Cowgirls have hosted WSU once, an 88-67 win in 1991.
