Lahaina, Maui.  (Oct. 29, 2021) --  Friday's first round of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational saw the Wyoming Cowboys get off to a good start as senior Bryce Waters led the way with an opening round of 67 (-4) to sit in a tie for sixth place.  As a team, Wyoming shot under par on the day, recording a 282 (-2) to tie with Sacramento State for eighth place in the field of 14 collegiate teams.
 
Wyoming is three strokes back of Cal State Northridge, who is in seventh place.  UConn is five strokes ahead of the Pokes in sixth, and No. 33 ranked Nevada (276, -8) is only six strokes up on Wyoming.  There are also two teams right behind the Cowboys.  Denver and Gonzazga are tied for 10th at 283 (-1).
 
Waters is only three strokes back of tournament leader Hugo Townsend of Boise State.  Cowboys Jimmy Dales and Jaren Calkins are tied for 30th at 70 (-1).
 
The No. 44 ranked Broncos and No. 14 ranked Kansas Jayhawks are tied for the lead in the team competition at  268 (-16).  
 
"We had a solid start to the tournament today," said Joe Jensen, UW Director of Golf.  "Bryce (Waters) played very relaxed today and put together a really nice round.  Jimmy (Dales) and Jaren (Calkins) also started strong today.
 
"I liked the attitude of the guys coming into this tournament, and for the most part that showed in their play today.  I want the guys to stay loose and stay focused in the moment. 
 
"We're in the middle of the field with several teams grouped closely together.  We want to follow up today's round with two more days of solid play and see if we can move up a few spots.
 
The Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational in being hosted by the University of Hawai'i.  The tournament is being  played at the Ka'anapali Golf Club's Royal Ka'anapali Course in Lahaina, Maui.  The course measures 6,700 yards and plays to a par of 71.
 
The tournament will continue on Saturday with the second 18-hole round, and will conclude on Sunday with the third and final 18-hole round.
