LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 20, 2021) – With a new season on the horizon, the Wyoming Cowboy Wrestling squad welcomes a new class of freshman grapplers. Get to know the Cowboy Newcomers through this Q&A series.

A Wyoming native, Analu Benabise put together an impressive high school career that saw him win four state titles while competing for Kelly Walsh High School.

How has practice and training differed from high school to college?

Practices are a lot more intense in college than they were in high school. There's a lot more attention to detail as well. That's what makes the competition so great.

What are you most looking forward to going into your fist season at UW?

I'm really looking forward to competing as much as possible so I can be that starter when the time comes.

What is one thing you learned in your high school career that will help you to compete at the college level?

I learned that no matter what the score is, you're never out of the match. Always keep wrestling.

What is your favorite memory from your high school career?

My favorite high school memory was my senior year when I won my fourth state title.

Do you have any pre-match or pre-tournament rituals and/or superstitions?

Before every match I always say a prayer.

What's the best piece of advice you have been given during your wrestling career so far?

Wrestling is only 10% physical. The other 90% is mental. Learn to be mentally tough and composed.

What's it like to get to stay in state and wrestle for the Cowboys?

Staying in the state was a huge benefit for me and my family. Not only do I get to represent the cowboys, but I also get the chance to go home every now and then to see my family.

Were you a big fan of the Cowboy wrestling team growing up?

I was a huge fan of the cowboys since I was little. It is such an honor, and an amazing opportunity to be able to complete for them.

What motivated you the most on your path to become a four-time state champion?

My biggest motivation in achieving four state titles was getting to a D1 college and become the best wrestler that I can be.

What's it like being on a team with other Wyoming natives including another Kelly Walsh Alumni?

Being on a team with other people that I've grown up wrestling is amazing. I felt right at home as soon as I got here. It's even better that I previously went to school with one of them. This has been the best change and opportunity in my life so far.
