LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Oct. 13, 2021) – The Wyoming tennis team opened play at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, hosted by UNLV Wednesday, in the first day of the five-day event. The opening rounds in both doubles and singles play kicked-off competition at the tournament.
In doubles play, the duo of Ana Fernandez and Sophie Zehender picked up a victory in the opening round, defeating Dunlap and Sterk of Montana, 8-5. With the win, Fernandez and Zehender will now face Utah's Horwood and Hung in the Round of 32.
On the singles' side of play, Maria Oreshkina, who enters the tournament as the No. 14 seed, picked up a tough, three-set victory over Montana's Garcia Reboredo 5-7, 6-4 and 6-4. 16th-seeded Zehender picked up a First Round win over New Mexico's Hsuan Huang, also rallying for in three sets to win 5-7, 6-0 and 6-4.
Noesjka Brink also picked up an opening round victory in singles play, as she battled for a three-set win after dropping her opening set. Brink defeated Utah's Emily Dush, 5-7, 6-3 and 7-6. All three Cowgirls picked up wins in Flight One.
In Flight Two, UW picked up two more wins as Serina Abriola and Mihaela Kaftanova both snagged opening round victories. Abriola defeated Nevada's Cristina Moll in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3. Kaftanova meanwhile picked up an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Juliana Honczaruk of Dixie State. Lucia Malinak received an opening round bye.
The Cowgirls return to action at the regionals with second round action in doubles play, with second and third round action on the singles' side.
