Maricopa, Ariz. (Jan. 4, 2021) --  As they prepare for a return to traditional college golf tournaments this spring, eight University of Wyoming golfers competed this week in the 2021 Troon Saguaro Amateur tournament in Maricopa, Ariz.  Wyoming redshirt sophomore Jimmy Dales from Northville, Mich., was the top finisher for the Pokes, tying for 17th in the field of 112 top amateur golfers.  Dales finished at 213 (-3) in the 54-hole event.
 
Two other Cowboys finished in the top half of the field.  Junior Bryce Waters of Midland, Texas, tied for 33rd at 218 (+2), and sophomore Jared Edeen of Cheyenne, Wyo., tied for 52nd with a three-round total of 221 (+5).  Sophomore Tyler Severin of Johnstown, Colo., placed just outside the top half of the field in 58th place at 222 (+6).
 
Rounding out the Cowboys competing at the Saguaro Am were: true freshman Patrick Azevedo of Othello, Wash. at 227 (+11), redshirt freshman Liam Clancy of Billings, Mont. at 230 (+14) and sophomore Kirby Coe-Kirkham of Sheridan, Wyo. at 232 (+16).  True freshman Ethan Cates of Cheyenne,  Wyo., withdrew after the second of three rounds. 
 
All eight Wyoming Cowboys played unattached as college golfers are being allowed to compete in amateur events throughout the 2020-21 season until college-hosted tournaments return this spring.  College golfers are allowed to play in amateur events without using a year of eligibility. 
 
The Saguaro Amateur tournament was played at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.  The format for the tournament was 18 holes each on Saturday, Jan. 2 through Monday, Jan. 4.  Ak-Chin Southern Dunes measured 7,330 yards and played to a par of 72.
 
Wyoming is scheduled to begin the 2021 collegiate season at the Pizza Hut-Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah University Saturday, Feb. 6 through Monday, Feb. 8 in St. George, Utah.  That tournament is expected to be a traditionally scored collegiate tournament with both team and individuals scores being kept.
