UW Swimming and Diving Begins Competition against Hawaii, UNLV

The meet will be completed tomorrow

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Jan. 28, 2021) – In a double-dual format with Hawaii and UNLV, the Wyoming men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up with eight swimming events and diving each on Thursday. The final events will be completed tomorrow and final scores tallied.
 
In the 400 medley relay, the Cowgirls finished fourth in a time of 3:50.90 with the team of Katelyn Blattner, Rylie Pilon, Hannah Mclean-Leonard and Lainee Jones. Emily Giles, Isabel Rich, Kira Crane and Kali Franckowiak placed seventh with a time of 3:56.15. For the Cowboys, the team of Max DeYoung, Mitchell Hovis, Harry Tjaden and Austin Crump went a 3:23.83 for a seventh place finish.
 
"Hannah (Mclean-Leonard) swam great in the 200 butterfly and 200 IM," head coach Dave Denniston said. "Sani (Carsrud) went very fast in her 100 free and set up a really nice race, while Hannah (Linde) went a best-time in her 100 breaststroke."

Roxanna Ramirez finished fourth in the 1650 freestyle with a 17:12.59 followed by Sage Morton in a career-best time of 17:16.15. Maggie Clerkin posted a fifth place finish with a time of 17:27.55. Brandon Samaniego posted a career-best time of 15:59.55 to place third, while Daniel Cumnock-Francois was right behind in a time of 16:09.91.
 
In the women's 100 backstroke, Jones recorded a season-best time of 58.08 followed by Blattner in 58.17 to finish seventh and eighth respectively. DeYoung was the top finisher for the men with a career-best 50.92 along with Reilly Gilbert in his best time of 51.81.
 
Hannah Linde touched the wall in a season best time of 1:05.95 in the 100 breaststroke to finish sixth. Pilon posted a time of 1:06.35 to finish eighth while Pilon went 1:-6.35 and Andrea Niemann was right behind in a time of 1:06.51. For the men, Hovis finished sixth with a time of 57.33 while John Wargin touched the wall in 58.21 for an eighth place finish.
 
In the 200 butterfly, Mclean-Leonard went a season-best 2:04.33 for a top place finish. Emma Mehl had a season-best with a 2:09.65 and Rich posted a career-best time of 2:11.95. Tjaden swam a career-best 1:51.30 on the way to a second place finish while Thomas Diaz posted a time of 1:52.59 to finish fifth.
 
Sani Carsrud placed second in the 100 freestyle with her season-best time of 51.39. Jones was fourth with a time of 51.68 and Franckowiak turned in a time of 52.15. For the Cowboys, Crump turned in a time of 46.58 to place eighth. Ryan Netzel and DeYoung posted season-best times of 47.13 and 47.46, respectively.
 
Mclean-Leonard finished up her night with a second place finish and a season best time of 2:05.71 in the 200 IM. Niemann was ninth with a time of 2:08.58 and Giles recorded a time of 2:09.61. Luke Walker was the top finisher for the men in a time of 1:55.78 followed by Andrew Rodriguez who posted a time of 1:56.51.
 
In the 200 free relay, the team of Carsrud, Franckowiak, Blattner and Jones went 1:36.87 for a fourth place finish. For the Cowboys, Crump, DeYoung, Jakob Borrman and Sloan finished third in a season-best time of 1:25/71.
 
On the boards, Melissa Mirafuentes paced the way for the Cowgirls in the 3-meter. She finished first with a season-high score of 313.50. McKenna Houlihan was fifth with a total of 259.05 while Makena Sanger posted a career-best 209.00 and Abigail Zoromski went 208.75. For the Cowboys, Brendan Byrnes led the way with fifth place finish and a score of 285.20. Juan Gonzalez followed in sixth with his score of 279.10 after six dives, while Elijah Chan recorded a mark of 255.10 to finish in eighth.
 
Both squads will be back in the pool on tomorrow at the Buchanan Natatorium. The competition is scheduled to begin with the women's 3-meter at 10 a.m. MT and swimming will begin at 11:30 a.m.
