LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 27, 2021) – Two years after wrapping up his impressive Cowboy Career,
Branson Ashworth will return to action now representing the Wyoming RTC. Ashworth is set to compete on Friday, Jan. 29 at the Summit 1 event presented by the Pennsylvania RTC and Wrestlers in Business Network.
Ashworth was a three-time NCAA Qualifier for the pokes posting three straight 30 plus win seasons. He totaled 121 wins in his career to rank him sixth in program history. Ashworth has competed at the international level since graduating, taking bronze at the 2020 Cerro Pelado. He has also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Wyoming for the last two seasons.
Ashworth will compete on the on the events main card at 79 kg against Dan Vallimont. Vallimont was a two-time All-American for Penn State and a NCAA finalist. Vallimont has competed at the senior level in both national and international events.
"It's been almost a year since I've competed last in Havana, Cuba so I'm just pumped for the opportunity to compete again against a high-level competitor with a lot of international experience. It should make for an exciting bout!" Said Ashworth
For Ashworth, his first competition in almost a year was not entirely foreseen.
"Competing in this event was pretty spur of the moment, I asked Branch about reaching out to Brandon Slay the director of the Penn RTC about finding me a match at Summit 1 and everything kind of fell into place pretty quickly after that, thought process in my preparation has just been excitement to get back on the mat!" Said Ashworth
Despite being away from competition for some time and the spur of the moment nature of the competition Ashworth is ready to compete.
"No nerves at all, just excited for the opportunity to go out to Philadelphia and compete and be a part of an awesome event, these new wrestling cards have been really cool and have been super exciting, so I'm just excited to be apart one!"
The entirety of the 30-match card will be streamed on Rofkin with the Senior level main card starting at 6 p.m. MT.
