Nguyen Paces Cowgirl Golf on First Day in Utah

UW sits in eighth place

ST. GEORGE, Utah (March 9, 2020) – Sophomore Michelle Nguyen led the way for the Wyoming golf team as it opened up the first day of the 2020 BYU at Entrada Classic on Monday in St. George, Utah.
 
After 36 holes, the Cowgirls are in eighth place with a 44-over 620. UW opened up the day with a 25-over 313 first round to sit in tenth. The second round brought a 19-over 307 which moved them up to the eighth spot headed into tomorrow.
 
Nguyen was the low Cowgirl on the day with an 8-over 152 score and sits in a tie for 18th. She started off the day shooting a five-over 77 in a tie for 23rd. In the second round, she moved up five spots after carding a 3-over 75.
 
Senior Erin Sargent turned in a first round score of seven-over 79 and followed that up with a 4-over 76. She is currently tied for 30th at 11-over 155 heading into Tuesday. Playing as an individual, freshman Jessica Zapf posted a first round 7-over 79, while shooting a second round 6-over 78 to sit in a tie for 39th. Senior Kaylee Knadler had an opening round of eight-over 80 but turned in a 7-over 79 later in the day. She moved up three spots and is currently tied for 44th with a 15-over 159 score.
 
"Today was a real fight for us and test all aspects of our games," head coach Josey Stender said. "I'm very proud of their resilience, adaptability and focus in some tough situations. I'm going to challenge the team to continue to play aggressive and confident tomorrow."
 
Sophomore Cristiana Ciasca completed her first round with a 5-over 77 which was tied for 23rd. She would shoot a second round 11-over 83. Junior Caitlyn Skavdahl had a first round 12-over 84, while finishing the second round 5-over 77.
 
North Texas leads the field at 3-under (573), followed by Iowa at 18-over (594) and host school BYU in third closely behind at 19-over (595). Idaho sits in fourth with a 33-over 609 and Utah Valley rounds out the top five at 37 over 613.
 
The tournament is set up on the 6,082-yard, par-72 course at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. Play is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. MT on Tuesday with 18 holes in a shotgun start.
