Cowboy Basketball Continues Homestand Hosting Texas Southern

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 29, 2020) – The Wyoming Cowboys continue their homestand on Monday hosting SWAC preseason favorite Texas Southern at 7 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie. It is the third all-time meeting against the two schools in a series that dates back to 1988.

Fans can watch and listen to the contest as well as follow stats on GoWyo.com. The contest will be broadcast live on radio over the 26 affiliate stations of the Cowboy Sports Network, as Reece Monaco will have the call with Kevin McKinney on color.
 
A Look at the Matchup
The Cowboys opened the game against Mississippi Valley State going 5-of-5 from behind the arc and never looked back in a 97-61 win in the season opener on Saturday.. It was the first game under head coach Jeff Linder as the Pokes knocked down 13 triples in the opener. Wyoming recorded 24 assists on the night on 35 made baskets for the most in contest since having 28 against Drake on Dec. 2, 2017. The Cowboys shot 52 percent from the field for the night and held the Delta Devils to 37 percent from the field. Wyoming shot 37 percent from behind the arc in the contest holding MVSU to 31 percent. Wyoming owned a 41-38 advantage on the glass and scored 40 points in the paint.
 
The Tigers head into the contest with an 0-2 record after falling to Oklahoma State by a score of 85-65 on Saturday. TSU opened the season with a 56-52 loss at Washington State on Nov. 25. Texas Southern averages 58.5 points per game, while allowing 70.5 points per contest. The Tigers are shooting 34 percent from the field with opponents shooting 38 percent. TSU grabs 43 rebounds per game for the season for a +4.5 margin.
 
 
Each Team's Leaders
Junior Hunter Thompson led the Pokes in the opener tying a career-high with 25 points. He was 5-of-7 from behind the arc and added six rebounds. Junior Drake Jeffries added 19 points and led the Pokes with eight rebounds in his debut.
 
Freshman Marcus Williams added 20 points for the Pokes and had eight assists to lead the Pokes alongside junior Hunter Maldonado and his eight. Maldonado also added 10 points and seven rebounds. Williams is the first freshman in the MW era of Cowboy basketball to score 20 points in a season opener. Also the eight assists by Williams and Maldonado were the most in a season opener since Brad Jones had eight in against UC-Colorado Springs on Nov. 10, 2007.
 
Texas Southern is led by Galen Alexander at 16 points per game. He also adds 4.5 rebounds per game shooting 42 percent from the field. Michael Weathers adds 11.5 points per game and leads the team grabbing eight rebounds per night. John Walker III adds
10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds along with three assists per night.
 
About The Series
Wyoming leads the all-time series against Texas Southern 2-0 in a series that dates back to 1988. Wyoming defeated the Tigers 72-66 in the last meeting coming during the 2017-18 season.
