TEMPE, Ariz. (April 5, 2019) – Wyoming kicked off this weekend's competition with three personal bests in the hammer throw and a strong showing from a Cowgirl sprinter in a premiere section at the Sun Angel Classic.
"I was very proud of how the crew competed today," said Wyoming throws coach
Carrie Lane. "Emelda's flight had some impressive throwers, and she handled that level of competition so well. All three men's throwers are showing very good form, and it was great to see PRs from Hap and Kirk. Jerayah also finished well ahead of her ranking in the 200m race."
Emelda Malm-Annan had a great day in the thrower's circle, as she entered the premiere heat of the hammer throw seeded seventh, but finished in fourth. Her personal-best throw of 202 feet, 1 inch moved her up four spots in the standings. It also tightens her hold on the No. 3 throw in Cowgirl history. Overall, she finished second among collegians behind the NCAA's leader in the event this season. The premiere flight was stacked, as the first place finisher is a former NCAA national champion who still holds the collegiate record, and second place is a former All-American in the event.
For the Cowboys,
Kirk Unland and
Eric McArthur finished six and seventh in the premiere heat of the men's hammer throw with heaves of 196-2 and 194-3, respectively. Unland's mark is good for a personal best. In the men's hammer throw,
Hap Frketich also had a career-best throw, as his mark of 189-0 was good for a fifth place finish.
On the track,
Jerayah Davis clocked in at 24.34 in the premiere section of the 200m dash to finish 11
th overall. She placed fourth in her heat, and it was her first attempt at the event this season.
The Wyoming track & field teams will continue action tomorrow at the Sun Angel Classic.
