Koonik Earns MW Tennis Player of the Week honors

It’s the first such honor of her career

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 6, 2019) --  For the first time this season, Wyoming tennis player Elisa Koonik has been selected the Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week. It's the first honor of her career and the second Cowgirl to win this season.

Koonik, a senior from Tallinn, Estonia, went 4-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles last weekend helping the Cowgirls to victories over Montana State, New Mexico State and Northern Arizona along with 6-1 win against UTEP. She won in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, over Laura Mary of MSU followed up with a 6-0 6-4 win over Vanessa Valdez of UTEP. On Sunday, she defeated Lindsay Harlas of New Mexico State, 6-3, 6-4, and clinched the match against NAU with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Ellie Millard. She and partner Tessa van Der Ploeg went 3-1 over the three day stretch. The duo beat Mary and Fristam of Montana State, 6-4, along with a 6-2 win over Prelle and Percegona and a 6-4 victory against Challa and Klaga.  

She is currently 12-11 overall in singles play, 9-3 this spring while winning the last six matches in a row. In doubles action, she has an 11-17 mark. Koonik is currently ranked seventh all-time in doubles victories with 62 and 11th in singles wins with 63.

The Cowgirls are currently 9-5 overall in dual play and have won the last five matches in a row. Wyoming returns to action on Saturday, March 16 by hosting the Montana Grizzlies. The match is scheduled for 10 a.m. MT in Laramie.
