GREELEY, Colo. (March 31, 2019)–
Jerayah Davis broke the long jump school record that stood since 1980, as eight individuals and one relay team brought home event titles for Wyoming at the Tom Benich Invitational at Nottingham Field.
"It was a great day with lots of personal and seasonal bests," said head coach
Bryan Berryhill. "I thought we competed very well and showed improvement from last week's meet in all event areas."
Davis set a school record to win the women's long jump with a mark of 20-10.75, besting Patricia Miller's previous record of 20-4 that stood for 39 years. Davis' leap would rank sixth in the nation based on results heading into the weekend.
"(Davis) has been focusing more on the long jump this outdoor season and you could see that today," Berryhill said. "Jerayah's hard work and dedication and Coach (Quincy) Howe's excellent coaching led to this amazing result today."
Ja'la Henderson took second in the long jump with a personal-best 20-5, as she moves ahead of Miller for second all-time at UW. Henderson won the triple jump title with a leap of 42-9.
In the women's hammer throw,
Emelda Malm-Annan set a personal-best with a throw of 201-8 on her final attempt, becoming just the third Cowgirl in program history to record a throw over 200 feet.
Cowboys took three of the top four spots in the hammer throw.
Eric McArthur won the event title for the second-consecutive week with a personal-best 196-5.
Kirk Unland placed third with a mark of 190-2, while
Hap Frketich took fourth with a personal-best 185-6.
"I thought our hammer throwers had a very good meet with Emelda and Eric both winning with huge personal-best performances," said Berryhill.
On the track, Davis also won the 100m dash with a time of 11.50.
The women's 4x100m team of Davis, Henderson,
Shayla Howell and
Jordan Edmonds won the relay with a time of 45.57, which ranks fifth all-time at UW.
Kacey Doner and
Katelyn Mitchem took the top two spots in the 3,000m steeplechase with a pair of personal-best times. Doner, the reigning Mountain West Track Athlete of the Week, won the event with an altitude-adjusted time of 10:41.01 to improve upon her third-ranked time on the UW records list. Mitchem moved into fourth place all time at UW with a time of 10:45.76.
