COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (February 26, 2019) – Nine Wyoming track and field athletes have earned a total of 12 all-Mountain West honors following the league's indoor championships this past weekend. For the Cowgirls,
Ja'la Henderson and
Jerayah Davis each earned a pair of all-conference accolades. For the Cowboys,
Christopher Henry earned two honors, while
Hap Frketich,
Kirk Unland,
Jace Marx,
Jacob Harthun,
Brandon McGuire and
Bryce Ailshie each earned all-MW accolades. All-conference honors are given to athletes who finished among the top three in events.
Henderson won two events at the conference meet, the long jump and triple jump. Henderson has now won back-to-back indoor triple jump tiles, becoming the first Cowgirl to do so. This season, she leapt 42 feet, 8.25 inches to win the event. She also reclaimed the long jump title she previously won in 2016 with a jump of 19-11.5. These are Henderson's fifth and sixth career indoor all-conference honors, as has finished in the top three in the long jump every year of her career, and has won the triple jump each of the last two years.
Davis competed in four events last weekend, and finished in the top three in two of those events. She finished third in the 60m dash and second in the 200m dash. Davis, the school's 60m dash record holder, posted a 7.32 in the prelims and a 7.31 in the finals. In the 200m race, Davis won her finals heat with a time of 23.76, a new personal best that solidified her No. 2 spot on the all-time list. These are Davis' fifth and sixth all-conference honors, as she has found the podium in the 60m dash every year of her eligibility, and earned long jump honors as a sophomore in 2017.
Christopher Henry had an impressive weekend, finishing third in both the 3,000m race and the 5,000m race in one of the toughest distance conferences in the nation. His 3,000m time altitude converted to 8:09.71, while his 5,000m time converted to 14:17.99, which is a personal best and is fourth all-time at Wyoming. These are Henry's first two all-conference honors. He is the first Cowboy to earn all-conference honors in both the long distance races at the same meet since Mark Korir in 2008.
Frketich and Unland finished first and second in the men's weight throw last weekend. Frketich recorded a throw of 66-2.50 which is a personal best and the 10
th-best throw in Cowboy history. Unland placed second after entering the championships ranked third in the event. His throw of 63-8.75 tied his season best. This is Frketich's first career all-conference honor. For Unland, it's his second total all-conference honor, but his first during the indoor season, as he earned the accolade in the hammer throw during last year's outdoor season.
The men's 4x400m relay team of Marx, Harthun, McGuire and Ailshie took second at the conference championship meet with a time of 3:15.21, which is the seventh-best time in school history. For Marx, it is the second indoor all-conference honor and the third overall, as he is an all-MW performer in the indoor 4x400m relay in 2017 and the outdoor 100m dash in 2018. This is Harthun's first all-MW honor, and the first indoor honor for McGuire. McGuire earned all-conference accolades in the outdoor 400m hurdles last season. For Ailshie, this is the third all-conference honor following his 800m and 4x400m relay accolades from the 2017 season.
Now, the Pokes await the announcement of qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships, held Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, in Birmingham, Ala.
