DENVER, Colo. (Oct. 5, 2019) – The Wyoming men's and women's swimming each placed second at the DU Relays on Saturday at the El Pomar Natatorium. The men scored 322 points on the day followed by the women with 168 points.
"On the women's side, we were really strong on the freestyle events. Katilyn (Blattner), Sani (Carsrud), Lainee (Jones) all had really strong meets.
Emily Giles really came up big in the backstroke which helped us win the backstroke relay. It was very strong on the men's side, but felt like we dominated on the breaststroke events. The 500 relay was the highlight of the day with a first and second place finish led by a first place team of all freshman."
The Cowgirls took home the first victory of the day in the 3X500 free style relay behind the team of
Olivia Staver, Daniela Luna-Rocha and
Katelyn Blattner with a time of 15:27.52 to earn a spot a top the podium. In the 3X100 butterfly relay,
Phoebe Browne,
Kira Crane and
Hannah Mclean-Leonard place second with a 2:54.26 mark. In the seventh event of the day, the team of Blattner,
Kiana Junior and Giles touched the wall in 2:53.89 for a top place finish. The 4x25 relay team of
Sani Carsrud, Mclean-Leonard, Crane and
Lainee Jones posted a mark of 43.96. For the second straight season, the Cowgirls won the 500 yard crescendo relay with a time of 4:31.22 behind a good performance behind Crane, Carsrud, Blattner and Jones. In the final event of the night, the team of Mclean-Leonard, Carsrud, Jones and Blattner took it home with a final time of 3:29.79.
On the men's side, the Cowboys took the 3x500 event with a time of 14:15.25 from the all freshmen team of
Robert Mitchell,
Cameron Murphy and
Thomas Diaz. They were followed by
Seth Borgert, Daniel Cumnock-Francois and
Ryan Netzel with a time of 14:18.88. The next relay to come away with the victory by the team of
PJ Musser,
James Bouda and
Brayden Love in the 3x100 butterfly. The group finished with a time of 2:30.52. In the 3x100 breaststroke,
Mitchell Hovis,
Grant Sloan and Bouda captured the event in a time of 2:50.27. The 500 crescendo relay of Sloan, Musser, Borgert and Netzel placed second with a time of 4:05.47 to place second.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Friday against the Boise State Broncos on Friday. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. MT in Boise.
