LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Oct. 23, 2019) – Zarah Mughal picked up a singles victory and the doubles team of Ana Fernandez and Ana Royo won their opening-round doubles matchup for Wyoming to open day one of the ITA Mountain Regional hosted by UNLV.
The tandem of Fernandez and Royo got off to a solid start as the duo continues their fine fall season, defeating Valdez and Aveiga of UTEP, 6-3. UTEP had to retire in the match due to injury while the Cowgirls were up. Fernandez and Royo move on to face Lamoreaux and Hung of Utah.
Mughal advanced with a 6-4 and 6-3 win over Weber State's McKenna Lloyd to pick up her ninth singles victory this fall. Mughal will now face Samantha Li of UNLV on day two.
"Overall it was a good day," said assistant coach Erica Medlin.
"We got better against some really good competition. The girls brought the energy from the beginning and are getting more comfortable playing our style of tennis."
Clara Mansart and Oleksandra Balaba dropped their doubles contest against the team of Astle and Almeida of BYU, 8-6.
Balaba, Fernandez, Mansart and Royo also played singles matches on the day. Balaba was defeated by Bronte Murgett of New Mexico, 7-5 and 6-2. Fernandez lost to Joana Baptista of Boise State, 6-4 and 7-6. Mansart lost to Ana Morett of Weber State 6-2 and 6-1 and Royo was downed by Stella Cliffe of Colorado State, 6-2 and 6-2.
The Cowgirls continue their final fall tournament Thursday at day two of the ITAs.
