LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 3, 2018) – The Wyoming soccer will open up with its first of three contests this week against the Northern Colorado Bears on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT at Jackson Stadium in Greeley, Colo.
The Cowgirls are 3-0-1 on the season after a 2-1 win over Idaho State last Thursday afternoon. They currently sit in a tie for first in the Mountain West standings. Three Cowgirls had a team high three shots in the match against the Bengals. Freshman
Sekoya Romero had two shots including the game winning goal. Seniors
Jessie Gentle and
Alyssa Murray each had one assist, while senior
Taylor Burton logged 90 minutes. Wyoming outshot the ISU, 19-18, and had six total corner kicks. Junior Christina Salazar had two saves in goal and freshman
Hannah Lee had seven saves in her first action of the season.
Senior
Annika Clayton currently leads the team with two goals along with 13 shots and seven of them on goal. Five other Cowgirls have recorded one goal in four games while five different Cowgirls have assists. Salazar has played all four games in net, has 11 saves and a 0.53 goals against average. She is tied for second in shutouts in the league and goals against average (0.53 gaa).
The Cowgirl offense is averaging 18.2 shots compared 11.2 by its opponents. They have a 46.6 shots on goal percentage. UW ranks second in the MW with 73 shots and fourth in goals (7) and fifth in points (19) through four games.
Wyoming currently holds the longest non-conference home unbeaten streak in the country among D-I programs. The Cowgirls last loss at home against a non-conference opponent came on Sept. 22, 2013, to Idaho State in double overtime. The Cowgirls are 12-0-2 during the streak.
The Bears return seven starters and 21 letterwinners from a squad that went 13-7-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the Big Sky during the 2017 season. Senior midfielder Mariel Gutierrez returns after scoring nine goals, six assists and 24 points. Fellow senior midfielder Maddie Roberts follows with four goals and a team-high seven assists. UNC is coached by Tim Barerra who is in his 20th year with the program.
This will be the 17th meeting between the two schools. UW leads the series 9-5-2. The last time the schools met was September 10, 2017. Wyoming won the contest, 2-1 in Laramie. The last road meeting was September 13, 2016. The Bears came out on top 1-0.
