SOUTH BEND, Ind. (September 28, 2018) – A pair of Cowboys placed among the top 10 finishers out of a field of more than 140 runners at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational to lead Wyoming to a second-place finish with 105 points. The Cowboys finished ahead of host-school Notre Dame and nationally-ranked No. 28 Furman.
"The guys ran very well as a group today," said men's cross country coach
Scott Dahlberg. "They packed up early on, found each other and fed off each other. As the race progressed, they just started making moves where they saw best. I was real proud of the effort they put in."
For the second time in as many meets, junior
Paul Roberts led the way for the Cowboys, as the CSU-Pueblo transfer finished the five-mile course third overall with a time of 23:44.7. Junior
Christopher Henry joined Roberts in the top 10 with an eighth-place finish as he crossed the line at Burke Golf Course in 24:05.5.
"Paul and Chris put themselves in that front group about halfway through the race and kept pressing and mixing it up with some really good guys around the nation," Dahlberg said.
Junior
Harry Ewing finished third among Cowboys and 20
th overall with a time of 24:23.6, while junior
Daniel Hintz finished 28
th overall as he finished the course in 24:31.8. Rounding out Wyoming's scorers, sophomore
Jerald Taylor finished 49
th with a time of 24:55.3.
Roberts was just 1.7 seconds off the race-winner, 2017 All-American Connor McMillan out of BYU. The No. 2-ranked BYU Cougars finished first overall as a team with 23 points.
"Coming in, our goal was to try to run together as a group," Dahlberg said. "BYU, they're No. 2 in the nation right now, and they ran exceptionally well. Our goal as a team was to come in behind them, and we did today what we were setting out to do. I'm happy with how they ran and how they responded to the race. We think it's a good step forward going in to Pre-Nationals in two weeks."
The Cowboys return to the course on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Madison, Wis., for the Pre-Nationals race.
