Wyoming Continues Tournament Play on Saturday

UW closes out tournament tomorrow

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 15, 2018) – The Cowgirl tennis team resumed fall action on Saturday at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains.
 
"It was a mixed bag of results today for the team which was to be expected," head coach Dean Clower said. "We really liked the grit the team showed especially from our young freshmen. Toughness is what wins and we were tough. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and seeing more development among the team."
 
In singles, junior Ana Rojo won her opening match of the day over Synclair Larson (UNC), 6-3, 6-2, but lost in the second match, 6-4, 6-2,against Adrianna Sosnowska of Northern Arizona. Freshman Mihaela Kaftanova had a win over Eirene Granville of Northern Arizona unfortunately she would lose in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, against Annie Walker of Montana State. Fellow freshman Ida Krause lost her match, 6-2, 6-3, against Emily Strande of Boise State but responded with a straight set win, 6-4 6-2, over Granville of NAU.
 
Boise State's Lilian Poling defeated senior Elisa Koonik, 6-2, 7-5, while fellow senior Tessa van Der Ploeg retired in her match against Kristin Kerrigan of Air Force, 6-4, 1-0 (ret.) . The final Cowgirl in action freshman Ana Fernandez lost both of her matches on the day. She fell to Ruth Copas, 6-3, 6-1, followed by a tough three setter to Louise-Mare Botes, 6-7, 6-3, 14-12.
 
The team of Kaftanova and Royo were the only doubles team to come away with a win on Saturday. They defeated Evi Buijsen and Linnea Fristam of Montana State, 8-3, and will face Anna Battersby and Sandra Keta of Northern Colorado tomorrow. Koonik and van Der Ploeg dropped an 8-5 match against Emilie Haakansson and Hanneke Lodewijks of NAU, while Fernandez and Krause came up short against Daniela Cozzi and Jana Weiss of Southern Utah.
 
UW will wrap up with the final day of the Bedford Cup tomorrow. The Cowgirls return to action next Friday as they host the Wyoming Invite. The tournament will be Friday-Sunday and held at the UW Tennis Courts.
