Laramie, Wyo. (July 13, 2018) --  Two current Cowgirl golfers and a former Cowgirl wrapped up competitions in Colorado and California this week.  Caitlyn Skavdahl, who will be a sophomore this coming fall, competed in the Colorado Women's Match Play Championship.  Erin Sargent, who will be a junior on the Cowgirl team, and former Cowgirl Gabrielle Gibson both competed in the Women's California State Open.

Gibson, a native of Temecula, Calif., was the top finisher for the Cowgirls, tying for 23rd in the field of 56 golfers in the California State Open.  Gibson shot a 36-hole total of 151 (+7).  Sargent, from Longmont, Colo., tied for 34th, with a two-round score of 154 (+10).  She shot an outstanding round of 73 (+1) in the final round.

Skavdahl, a native of Casper, Wyo., earned her way into the Championship Flight of the Colorado Women's Match Play tournament by earning the fifth seed after shooting a four-over par round of 76 in the qualifying round.  She won her first round match by a score of 2&1 in the match play format over No. 12 seed Jennifer Hankins.  Skavdahl then lost in the second round to No. 4 seed Kennedy Swann as the two ended their match tied after 18 holes and went into sudden death before Swann won in 19 holes.  Swann would go on to win the match play championship.

"Obviously this is tremendous experience for Erin (Sargent) and Caitlyn (Skavdahl) as they compete with top amateurs and professionals this summer," said Josey Stender, head women's golf coach at UW.  "Caitlyn (Skavdahl) lost in a playoff to Kennedy Swann, who went on to win the Colorado Match Play event and is an all-conference player at Clemson.   The field at the Colorado Match Play was pretty loaded with a lot of collegiate players.  Anytime you advance as far as Caitlyn did in match play is a great accomplishment.

"Erin and Caitlyn are great leaders, and I have high expectations for them next year.  This added experience over the summer is going to be great preparation for next season.

"It is also exciting to see G.G. (Gabrielle Gibson) play well as she wraps up her amateur career and builds confidence as she prepares for Q school in the future."

The Women's California State Open was held on July 11-12 at Maderas Golf Club in Poway, Calif., and was a 36-hole, stroke-play tournament.

The Colorado Women's Match Play Championship was held at the Fox Hill Club in Longmont, Colo.  The Colorado Women's Match Play tournament was played over three days on July 11, 12 and 13 preceded by an 18-hole qualifying round on July 10.
