FT. COLLINS, Colo. (April 22, 2018) – The Wyoming tennis team (11-7 overall, 3-2 MW) closed out Mountain West regular season play with a 5-1 win over the Colorado State Rams (11-11 overall, 1-5 MW) on Sunday afternoon.
 
"I thought this was a total team win today," head coach Dean Clower said. "In doubles, we played our style and came away with the crucial doubles point. I thought we stayed the course in singles throughout the match. I feel as a team we are in a good spot playing at the highest level of the year and will be ready for the MW."   
 
In doubles action, it was a battle between the two teams. CSU struck first with Emily Luetschwager and Emma Corwin defeating Ana Tkachenko and Myiah Scott, 6-2. Senior Magdalena Stencel and sophomore Milka Genkova responded with a 6-3 victory against Riley Reeves and Emily Kolbow. It would come down to the number one spot to see who earned the point between juniors Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg against Alysa Grijalva and Priscilla Palermo. The match was close early until the Rams went ahead 4-3. The Cowgirls hung in there and tied it up at six to force a tiebreak. Colorado State took a 4-2 lead early, but UW responded with six of next eight points to win the match, 7-6 (8-6).
 
CSU earned its first point of the day at the sixth spot in the singles line-up. Corwin defeated Scott in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The Cowgirls would win the next four matches to help them to the seal the victory. Tkachenko beat Reeves, 6-4, 6-3, followed by Koonik defeating Grijalva, 6-1, 7-5. van Der Ploeg won the fourth point of the day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Kolbow. Stencel won her match, 6-3, 6-4, over Palermo, while Genkova was down against Luetschwager, 6-2, 4-3, but didn't finish.
 
UW returns to action on next week at the 2018 Mountain West Championships. The tournament begins on Thursday in Boise.
