LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 25, 2018) – The Wyoming tennis team (8-5 overall) closed out non-conference action with a 5-2 win against the Creighton Bluejays (12-5 overall) on Sunday morning in Laramie.

"Today was a good win for us," head coach Dean Clower said. "Creighton had won seven in a row so to earn a victory was good. I thought we were tough today. We didn't play great on any line, but really tough. Doubles we started off a little slow but we hung in there. This should give us some confidence going in to conference play."

In doubles action, the Cowgirls earned the first point of the day by winning two out of three matches. Juniors Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg opened up the day with a 6-3 win over Ashley Ishimura and Michaela Henne. At the number two spot, senior Magdalena Stencel and sophomore Milka Genkova fell behind 5-3 against Claire Embree and Erin Epperson. They battled back and won the next four games to take the match 7-5 and seal the point for UW. Sophomore Ana Tkachenko and freshman Myiah Scott were all tied up at six with Kendra Lavallee and Darby Rosette but didn't finish.

Koonik put Wyoming up 2-0 with a straight set win, 6-1, 6-1, over Rosette. Creighton won its first point of the day with Epperson defeating van Der Ploeg, 6-4, 6-2. Stencel needed three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, over Ishimura, while Tkachenko clinched the match for the Cowgirls with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Embree. Genkova battled back after dropping the first set, 6-4, and responded by winning the next two, 6-3, 7-5. In the final match of the day, Scott lost a tough one, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), against Celine Massereau.

The Cowgirls will return to action on Friday to begin Mountain West play against the Boise State Broncos.  The match is set for 2 p.m. at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts.
