LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 15, 2018) – The Wyoming diving team wrapped up its first day of diving at the Mizzou Invite while Cowboy and Cowgirl swimming team had a solid beginning of the Corbett Open on Thursday.
"Today we had some ups and downs but everyone came out mentally ready," head diving coach
Kyle Bogner said. "Both Ryan (Russi) and Peyton (GrandPre) did a phenomenal job in their respective finals and Ryan has picked up where he left off at the conference meet last season."
The UW diving squad traveled to Columbia Missouri for a three-day tournament featuring some tough competition. Senior
Ryan Russi was able to secure a second place finish in the finals of the one-meter dive with a season-high score of 311.80 just behind Missouri's Kyle Goodwin. He earned his way to the finals with a score of 294.15 to place third in the prelims and quarterfinals. Freshman
Brendan Byrnes earned a sixth place finish in the consolation finals bracket with a season-best score of 252.70 and 14
th overall. On the Cowgirls side, senior
Peyton GrandPre placed third in the consolation finals of the 3-meter board with a score of 261.20. She was 13
th after the first rounds of dives with a score of 249.70.
In the Corbett Open, the Cowgirl 200-freestyle relay opened up the day on a high note. The team of
Isobel Ryan,
Sani Carsrud,
Hannah Mclean-Leonard and
Samantha Burke would break the pool record with a time of 1:34.20. The previous mark was 1:34.89 set in 2010. Freshman
Lainee Jones edged out junior
Daniela Luna Rocha with a time of 5:01.37 in the 500 freestyle, while senior
Samantha Burke had a solid time of 2:05.53 in the 200 yard individual medley.
Sophomore
Seth Borgert came up short by two tenths of a second in the 500 freestyle touching the wall in 4:32.35. Senior
David Murphy turned in a strong time of 20.91 in the 50 freestyle. To cap the night off the Cowboys earned an explosive 3:19.93 finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The time was posted by

Liam Holt,
Brayden Love and
PJ Musser beating the previous record of 3:20.53.
"It went well today, the team attacked every swim they had," head coach
Dave Denniston said. "The whole point of this meet is to give our team an opportunity to break some records. I'm happy with where they're at and I can't wait to keep seeing that energy they've had all season."
Both will be back in action tomorrow at the Mizzou Invite and Corbett Open. The men will be in action in the 1-meter while the women are on the 3-meter board. Swimming will start at 4 p.m. MT with the second day of competition at Corbett Pool.
