LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 25, 2018) – The Wyoming volleyball team snapped its 12-match home win streak on Thursday night, dropping a tough, four-set match to league-leading Fresno State at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
The Cowgirls (15-8, 7-4 MW) hit a .277 hitting percentage, their third-highest mark in conference play, but were outdone by the Bulldogs' .293 mark. The Brown and Gold was out-blocked as a team, 9-7, for just the fifth time this season.
Three Cowgirls recorded 12 or more blocks, led by senior
Reed Copeland with 13 on a .579 hitting percentage. Redshirt sophomore
Jackie McBride and junior
Halie McArdle followed closely with 12 apiece. Setter
Cori Aafedt recorded her fourth 30-assist game of the season with an even 30 to lead the Pokes.
Defensively, Copeland led Wyoming in blocks with five total. Freshman
Jaiden Chase posted a career high in digs with 15, followed by
Madi Fields' 14.
The Cowgirls found themselves in a hole early, as Fresno State tallied 25-19 wins in both the first and second sets. The team bounced back, however, in the third to get on the board after a 25-22 win in the third. Wyoming seized control of the set with the help of a 4-0 run early to take a 12-8 lead and never trailed again, stretching its lead to as large as six before closing out the set.
The fourth set was tight, as the teams combined for 15 ties and a trio of lead changes with Wyoming fighting to keep the match alive. Tied at 20-all, Fresno State spurred a mini 3-0 run to take a 23-20 lead late that the Bulldogs wouldn't relinquish—eventually closing out the 25-22 fourth-set victory.
Wyoming will look to bounce back at home on Saturday as it hosts San Diego State at the UniWyo Sports Complex at 6:30 p.m. MT.
