Colorado Springs, Colo. (Oct. 19, 2018) – Both the Cowboy and Cowgirl swimming and diving teams earned their first conference wins of the season on Friday night against the Air Force Falcons. The Cowboys won 179-121 while the Cowgirls came away with a 166-132 win. Both sides won 12 of 16 events.
"I thought we took control of the dual early on," head coach
Dave Denniston said. "That's some of the fastest racing we've seen in a while and it's always a good day when you post the top three spots on both boards."
On the women's side, the team of
Samantha Burke,
Phoebe Browne,
Hannah Mclean-Leonard and
Isobel Ryan started the Cowgirls off with a victory in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:44.95. The Cowgirls would continue that success in the next event as
Daniela Luna Rocha and
Erin Eccleston finished first and second in the 1000-freestyle with times of 10:24.41 and 10:47.20, respectively.
The Cowgirls would put up another dominant performance in the 200 backstroke as the top four finishers in the event were all wearing the Brown and Gold.
Marcela Gramcko led the Cowgirls finishing first in the event with a time of 2:06.12. Freshman
Lainee Jones continued to be impressive on the young season. She won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.42 and a second place spot in the 500-yard freestyle behind sophomore
Katelyn Blattner who landed a first place finish in the event.
In the diving events, the Cowgirls had an equally solid night with the trio of
Peyton GrandPre,
CeeJay Harris and
McKenna Houlihan would take the top three spots in the 1-meter event. GrandPre led the Cowgirls taking first with a score of 248.93, Harris took second scoring 217.28 and Houlihan rounded out the top three with a final score of 214.80. That same trio would also go on to take the top three spots in the 3-meter event as well.
The Cowboys also kicked the night off with a win in the 200-yard medley who touched the wall in 1:32.15 was the team of
Tyler Klatt,
David Murphy,
Brayden Love and Jamie Bouda.
Mitchell Hovis and
Liam Holt took the top two spots for Wyoming in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 56.79 and 57.08. Following, Murphy,
PJ Musser and Bouda posted first, second and third times of 46.10, 46.26 and 46.38 in the 100-yard freestyle. In the 500-yard freestyle,
Ryan Netzel and
Jacob Harlan took first and second with times of 4:46.33 and 4:47.40.
"
Ryan Russi really came ready to work today he did a great job." Denniston added. "He won both boards with scores of 280.73 in the 1-meter and 310.50 in the 3-meter. Brendan Brynes also came in for the Cowboys at third place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 234.30."
The Cowgirls are now 3-0 in dual meets on the season and will prepare for another tough week of competition as they take on CSU on Wednesday and Denver on Saturday. The Cowboys will be back in action with the women on Saturday against Denver.
