Cowgirl Basketball Returns Home to Take on Spartans

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 25, 2018) – The Wyoming women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the San Jose State Spartans. The game is set for a 2 p.m. MT tip time in the Arena-Auditorium. Live stats, video and audio can be found on the GoWyo.com website.
 
The Cowgirls enter the contest 13-5 overall and sit in first place in Mountain West action with a 6-1 conference record. Wyoming extended its winning streak to six after a 65-62 win over Nevada on Wednesday night. Sophomore Selale Kepenc came in off the bench and recorded a team-high 12 points and tied a career-high with six rebounds. She was 4-of-8 (.500) from beyond the arc. Gomez followed with 11 points, two assists and shot 3-of-4 (.750) from beyond the arc. Senior Natalie Baker chipped in nine points while fellow senior Liv Roberts and junior Clara Tapia each chipped in eight points. Sophomore Taylor Rusk dished out a career-high seven assists and added six points. Wyoming shot 24-of-54 (.444) from the field and 11-of-21 (.524) from beyond the arc. As a team, UW finished with 30 points off the bench and 12 second chance points.
 
Roberts is averaging a team-high 12.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest, which ranks 13th and tenth in overall games, respectively in the MW. She is followed by Rusk who is adding 9.6 points and 3.2 assists, while Cotton is chipping in 8.7 points and 5.8 boards per game. UW is shooting 377-of-921 (.409) from the field and 211-of-272 (.776) from the free throw line. The Cowgirls are also outscoring its opponents 60.7-55.2 and out rebounding teams 33.5-32.6.
 
SJSU enters the game with a 6-13 record and 3-5 in MW play. Last time out, the Spartans were defeated by Boise State 112-80. Sophomore Taylor Turney leads the way in scoring with 14.5 points per game followed by senior Myzhanique Ladd with a team-high 7.1 rebounds along with 13.0 points. They return one starter and seven letterwinners to a team that went 11-21 and 7-11 in the league last season. This will be the 11th meeting ever between the two schools. UW leads the series 7-3. The last time the two teams met was March 3, 2017 with the Cowgirls coming out on top 68-59 in San Jose. The Spartans are coached by Jamie Craighead who is in her fifth season with the program.
