LARAMIE, Wyo. – Cowgirl soccer will kick off its weekend slate of games with its final non-conference road test on Friday against Utah Valley at 7 p.m. MT. Wyoming will then return home to the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in a clash with regional rival Northern Colorado at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Cowgirls (2-2-1) are one of six teams in the Mountain West sitting at .500 or better and will look to build on last weekend's positive results with two of their final three non-conference games this weekend. Redshirt junior forward
Brittney Stark leads the team with four goals this season, which is tied for first in the Mountain West and 23rd in the nation. Stark logged two goals and one assist against UTEP last Friday. Stark sits alone in second place in the Mountain West with nine total points.
Senior goalkeeper
Georgia Rowntree is coming off a weekend performance that earned her Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors. The team captain allowed just one goal in 200 minutes of action and recorded her first shutout of the season against McNeese State. Rowntree, along with junior defender
Taylor Burton, has played every minute thus far this season.
Despite ranking ninth in the MW in shots per game, the Cowgirls are third in goals per game, scoring 1.60 per contest, and are also averaging 2.0 goals per game at home this season. Wyoming is playing clean soccer, with the fewest fouls and offside calls per game.
The Cowgirls currently hold the longest non-conference home unbeaten streak in the country among D-I programs. Wyoming's last loss at home against a non-conference opponent came on Sept. 22, 2013, to Idaho State in double overtime. The Cowgirls are 9-0-2 during the streak.
Utah Valley is 2-4-0 on the year after a 2-1 win at Tulsa last Sunday. Utah Valley has yet to play a regular season game at home this year, and Friday's match against the Cowgirls will be the first. Last season, the Wolverines held a 5-2-1 record at home.
Utah Valley is averaging 18.5 shots per game, the highest for any Wyoming opponent so far this season. However, the Wolverines have just seven goals on the year, posting a shot percentage of .063. The Cowgirls, by comparison, hold a .151 shot percentage.
Utah Valley has also struggled in overtime this season, losing all three of its games that required extra time. The Wolverines fell to Hawaii and CSUN in overtime, 2-1, and double overtime against UNLV, also by a 2-1 margin.
Friday will be the latest installment in a series that Wyoming currently leads with a 6-1-0 record. Last season's matchup proved to be one of the Cowgirls' most thrilling games of the year, as Wyoming earned a 1-0 double-overtime victory on a last-second header by senior forward
Alisha Bass.
"Utah Valley is a great team, much better than their record shows," head coach
Pete Cuadrado said. "They've played every game on the road this season so obviously they'll be ready to play at home. We beat them last year but I thought they were a very strong team so we know we have our hands full."
Northern Colorado is 5-1-0 on the year coming off a 4-1 win over New Mexico State in its last outing. Sunday's contest will be the first road test for the Bears following a six-game homestand. UNC is averaging 2.17 goals per game and allowing just 0.83 goals per game from opponents. The Bears have yet to concede a goal in the first period this season.
The Bears opened the season sweeping a trio of Mountain West opponents in the Colorado Cup. UNC defeated Colorado College 3-1, before shutting out Air Force, 2-0, and finally put away Colorado State, 2-1. Northern Colorado will face North Dakota State on Friday to cap off its homestand.
Wyoming leads the overall series against Northern Colorado, 8-5-2. The Bears got the best of Wyoming in last season's match, 1-0, one of only two non-conference opponents to shut out the Cowgirls. Wyoming holds a 4-3-1 advantage against the Bears at home. Sunday will be UNC's first game this season outside the state of Colorado. The Bears are 2-0-0 on the road.
"I thought last year's game was one where we played really well and just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net," Cuadrado said. "They always play us tough, I feel like every year we get their A-game. It's definitely a rivalry and we know they'll be ready to play. We have to make sure we match their intensity."
