LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 30, 2017) – The Wyoming tennis team had another solid showing as the second day of competition took place at the Wyoming Invite on Saturday morning. Senior
Magdalena Stencel also began play at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
"It was good to get out and play some matches outside," said head coach
Dean Clower said. "The ladies made some adjustments during the matches in doubles today which was good to see. The team is growing on the court and working hard which we will need throughout the year. I love the work ethic of the team but we have to figure some things out if we want to challenge for a championship."
The team went 6-1 on the day in both singles and doubles action. The duo of
Elisa Koonik and
Tessa van Der Ploeg got things going with a 6-4 victory over Anna Battersby and Madeline Doherty of Northern Colorado.
Milka Genkova and
Ana Tkachenko rallied back after falling behind to pull out a 6-4 win over Tristen Bryan-Otake and Raffa Mora.
In singles action, the Cowgirls continued to be solid on the court. van Der Ploeg won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, over Mora followed by Genkova with her two-set win, 6-3, 6-4, against Battersby. Koonik and Tkachenko each won their matches, 6-2, 6-0, against Doherty and Carrigan Blanchard, respectively.
In the pre-qualifying singles draw, Stencel dropped her opening match of the day, 6-4, 6-1, against Margot Decker of Kansas State. She responded with a straight set win, 6-1, 6-2, against Karina Traxler of SMU in the consolation round. The team of Koonik and van Der Ploeg will begin play at the Championships on Tuesday in the qualifying doubles draw.
