COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Wyoming soccer fell to Air Force in overtime, 1-0, on a headed goal in the 98th minute at the Cadet Soccer Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Wyoming (5-4-1, 1-1-0 MW) had not conceded a goal in over 307 minutes of action, dating back to a 2-1 win over Northern Colorado on Sept. 10, but finally allowed an opponent to score in the 98th minute on Sunday. Air Force (4-4-1, 1-0-1 MW) senior forward Brooke Rittman headed in the game-winner after freshman forward Jillian Jamero and junior forward Kaitlyn Cook set up the opportunity.
"It's frustrating to take as many shots as we did and not have a goal," UW head coach
Pete Cuadrado said. "We have to take advantage of our chances and make good decisions. We're excited to come home next weekend but the path doesn't get any easier. We know we have our hands full and we'll be ready."
The goal came against the run-of-play after the Cowgirls tallied three early shots in the extra period. Overall, Wyoming outshot the Falcons, 20-12, and put 12 shots on goal to Air Force's four. Both marks were season highs for UW. Junior forward
Brittney Stark led the team with career-highs in shots (7) and shots on goal (4). Junior defender
Taylor Burton logged four shots, putting every attempt on frame. Burton, along with senior goalkeeper
Georgia Rowntree and junior defender
Alyssa Murray, played every minute of the match.
The Cowgirls return home next weekend for their first conference games at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex this season. Wyoming will face Fresno State on Friday at 4 p.m. MT, followed by a Sunday matchup with San Jose State with kick-off slated for 1 p.m. Both games will be available online at GoWyo.com and themw.com.
