LARAMIE, Wyo. –. Cowgirl soccer will face the Idaho State Bengals this Thursday at 4 p.m. MT at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in its final non-conference match of the 2017 season.
The Cowgirls (3-3-1) look to climb above .500 for the first time this season in their only game of the week before starting MW competition next weekend. Redshirt junior forward
Brittney Stark leads the team with four goals this season, which is tied for second in the Mountain West, despite only taking 14 shots. No other player in the MW has scored four or more goals on fewer attempts. Senior defender
Tristan Tyrrell recorded her team-leading third assist of the season on Sunday, tied for the second-most in the conference.
Senior goalkeeper
Georgia Rowntree currently ranks sixth in the conference in total saves, already with 25 this season. Her one shutout still ranks third in the MW, as only two conference keepers have logged multiple clean sheets in 2017. Junior defender
Taylor Burton is now the only Cowgirl to compete in every minute of action this season for UW, averaging 95.7 minutes per game.
Wyoming ranks seventh in the MW in shots per game averaging 11.14 attempts, and fourth in goals per game scoring 1.57 per contest. UW takes fewer shots than Idaho State, which records 16.5 shots per game, but has tallied nearly three times as many goals as the Bengals. The Cowgirls have also recorded 2.0 goals per game at home.
Wyoming currently holds the longest non-conference home unbeaten streak in the country among D-I programs. Sunday will be a unique test for the Cowgirls as they to keep the streak alive. Wyoming's last loss at home against a non-conference opponent came on Sept. 22, 2013, to Idaho State in double overtime. The Cowgirls are 10-0-2 during the unbeaten run.
"I thought last Sunday was the first time this season that we played a complete 90 minutes, so now it's about consistency and repeating that performance," UW head coach
Pete Cuadrado said. "Idaho State's forwards are extremely dangerous and we have to be aware of that, especially on set pieces. But we're improving each game and getting healthier. It's important to close out the non-conference schedule with a win and if we have back-to-back games where we give a complete performance, I'll feel good about where we are entering conference play."
The Bengals are 1-5-0 on the season after losing their fifth-straight game against Hawaii last Tuesday, 1-0. Idaho State's lone win in 2017 came in the season-opener on the road at Chicago State.
Idaho State has been outscored 11-1 during its losing streak. The Bengals fell to MW foes Boise State and Utah State, by margins of 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. They also lost to UTEP in double-overtime, 2-1, on Sept. 3, two days after the Cowgirls took down the Miners at home by a score of 3-1.
The Bengals have netted four goals in total this season, each coming from a different player. Junior midfielder Meaghan Bare notched the game-winner against Chicago State.
Wyoming leads the overall series between the two schools with a 5-3-1 record. The Cowgirls won in Pocatello, Idaho, last season, 2-0. UW is 3-2-0 against the Bengals at home, and won the last meeting at the Louis S. Madrid Sport Complex, 3-0, on Sept. 18, 2015.
