UW Tennis Players Receive ITA Scholar-Athlete Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. (July 25, 2017) – Imogen Clews, Milka Genkova, Dorottya Jonas, Elisa Koonik and Miranda Talbert were each named ITA Scholar-Athletes for their work in the classroom, while the Cowgirl team was honored with the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Associations' (ITA) All-Academic Team Award. The awards were given out by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday. More than 3,908 scholar-athletes were recognized across all divisions, along with over 720 all-academic teams.
Clews and Genkova each finished their freshman campaigns with 3.75 GPA's in physiology and finance respectively while earning Academic All-Mountain West and Scholar-Athlete honors. Koonik also garnered Academic All-MW and Scholar-Athlete honors after carrying a 3.88 GPA in marketing. Talbert finished her year with a 3.83 GPA in marketing along with Jonas who had a 3.53 GPA for the year in finance. Both were also selected Academic All-MW and MW Scholar-Athlete. As a team, the Cowgirls earned the award with a 3.37 grade point average during the 2016-17 academic year. 

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).

Jonas had an overall singles record of 20-12 and 18-10 in doubles play, while Talbert went 15-9 in singles and 10-4 in doubles action. Koonik finished the year with a 19-8 singles mark and 20-7 in doubles. Genkova had a 19-8 overall mark and 12-10 in doubles action followed by Clews who saw limited time in her first season. 
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2016 and spring 2017).
Wyoming finished the 2016-17 season 18-4 overall and 5-0 in Mountain West action.
